Edison did not invent the light bulb. Lamps that glowed when you ran current through them had existed for decades and they burned out in minutes. What he did was harder and much less romantic, and it is the reason he matters: he made one that lasted, then built everything else a lamp needs in order to be worth owning.
This biography runs the whole life, boy to old man. It opens with him feeding a playmate a mixture of worms and water to find out whether she would fly, which tells you both what the book is good at and what it is short on.
The science it actually teaches
Four things in here are real engineering, and they are better than the story the culture tells about him.
First, the filament. There was no theory in 1878 that could tell anybody which material would glow for hours without burning up. So his laboratory tested them. Material after material, one at a time, recording what failed. That is what a search looks like when nobody has a map, and it is a legitimate scientific method rather than a sign that he was flailing. Most of the inventions in this book came out of the same grind.
Second, and this is the one almost nobody teaches. Edison did not design his lamp on its own. He designed it around the price of copper. A filament with high resistance draws only a small current for the light it gives off. Small current means you can feed it through thin wire without the wire heating up and eating your power on the way. Had he built a low-resistance lamp, the copper for the streets would have cost more than the whole business could carry. The constraint picked the design. That is engineering, and it is a completely different activity from having an idea.
Third, the system. A bulb by itself is a curiosity. In 1882 he switched on a station in lower Manhattan that lit up a district, and that meant generators, mains under the street, fuses, switches, sockets, and meters so that people could be sent a bill. He invented a product and then invented the entire apparatus that made the product usable. Ask which of those was the real invention and the honest answer is the second one.
Fourth, the phonograph, which contains the clearest physics in the book. Your voice pushes air. The air pushes a thin diaphragm. The diaphragm pushes a needle. The needle scratches a groove into foil on a turning cylinder, deep here and shallow there, exactly as the air moved. Now run the needle back along that groove and it shakes the diaphragm, the diaphragm shakes the air, and the room hears you again. Every single link is visible and mechanical. There is nothing in it a nine-year-old cannot follow, and it is the best forty minutes of conversation this book will buy you.
There is a fifth thing, and it is a failure, which makes it useful. Edison's electricity was direct current at low voltage, and low-voltage direct current cannot travel. Push it a mile and most of it has turned into warm wire. His system therefore needed a generating station every few streets, and he fought hard for that arrangement and lost it. A child who understands why he lost has understood more physics than a child who only knows he won.
And underneath all of it sits the invention people forget. He built a laboratory in New Jersey full of machinists, chemists, glassblowers and draftsmen, with a library and a patent process attached, whose job was to produce inventions on a schedule. That building is why the lone genius picture is wrong. The output was a team's.
The child it lands with
You know the one. Things come apart in your house and do not go back together, and nobody in the family can find the small screwdriver.
Also the child who thinks they are not clever enough to invent anything, because the story they have been told is that inventors get struck by lightning ideas. This book, read properly, says the opposite. It says you try the next material, and the next one, and you write down what failed.
One place to stop and talk
Two things, one to say and one to do.
Say this after the Manhattan chapter: everything in your house that runs is sitting at the far end of somebody's system. Then go and stand at the breaker box with your child and follow it backwards out the wall, up the pole, down the road. Ask what would have to already exist for one bulb in your kitchen to light.
Then do the phonograph. Talk into a paper cup with a pin taped to the bottom and let them feel the pin move. They will not build a working machine on the kitchen table and that is fine. Feeling a voice turn into a moving needle is the whole point.
What to know going in
The worm story on page one is the tell. This book leans on anecdotes about the boy more than on how the work was actually done, and by the time it reaches the laboratory the inventions start arriving as a list. It admires its subject, and Edison is not tidy. In the fight over which kind of current would wire America, his side ran public demonstrations electrocuting animals to make alternating current look like a killer. That is on the historical record whether or not a book for third graders puts it in front of your child, so read ahead before you promise them a hero.
Which brings up the pairing. We also carry Who Was Nikola Tesla, and each book is told from the inside of its own man's life. The same rivalry comes out a different shape depending on which one you are holding, and the fellow who is the obstacle in one is the great American inventor in the other. That is not a flaw in either book. It is the most useful thing you can hand a child about history: two accounts, both honest, that do not agree. Read them a week apart and ask which one they would trust and why.
There is also his deafness. He was nearly deaf from childhood, and the sound inventions are sometimes told in a way that makes that neat. It was not neat.
