Five years at sea, seasick for most of them. That is the piece of Charles Darwin everybody can recite, and it is the smaller half of the story. What he carried home in those crates took him another twenty years to work out, and the reason this book is worth owning is that it does not pretend otherwise.
Deborah Hopkinson wrote it, the store bands it 3 to 6, and it runs on the same series template as every other Who Was? title: a whole life from a boy in trouble at school to a famous old man, short chapters, drawings every few pages, sidebars off to one side for the things that will not fit. Nothing about the format is a surprise. What is inside it is better than the format deserves.
The science it actually teaches
This is a book about how one very large idea got built, and it is the best thing on our science shelf for a child who has heard the word evolution and has no real idea what it means.
Start with the idea itself, because it can be handed to a nine year old in four steps and it usually is not.
One. More get born than can possibly live. A fish lays thousands of eggs. An oak drops thousands of acorns. The world is not knee deep in fish and oaks, so most of them do not make it.
Two. They are not identical. Some are faster, some are darker, some have a slightly heavier beak.
Three. Those differences change the odds. Not by much. Just by a little, and only in the particular place the animal happens to live.
Four. Whatever lives long enough to breed passes its differences on.
Run those four in order and natural selection stops being a slogan and starts being arithmetic. There is no intention in it anywhere. There is nothing being aimed at. There is only what survives in this place, this year, and then again next year, and the year after that, for a length of time a person cannot really picture.
Now the part this book gets right that most children's books skip. Darwin did not think that up on a boat. He spent five years collecting, labelling, packing and shipping specimens home, and the notebooks and the crates came first. The evidence pushed him, not the other way round. Two pieces of it did most of the pushing. In South America he dug up the bones of enormous animals that no longer exist, in ground where smaller living animals that look a great deal like them are still walking around. And in the Galapagos, animals turned out to differ from one island to the next, on islands close enough to see from each other. Something local had shaped them, and it had shaped them separately.
Then the twenty years, which is the real lesson. He had the idea and he did not publish it. He turned it over, worked on other things, tested it against everything he could find, and kept looking for the thing that would break it. That is not timidity. That is what an honest person does with an idea big enough to be wrong in public. What finally moved him was a letter: another naturalist, working on the other side of the world, had arrived at the same explanation and sent it to him. The book came out in 1859, more than twenty years after the Beagle got home.
A child who finishes this one can tell you what natural selection says, roughly what kind of evidence sits behind it, and that a scientist can be right and still take twenty years to be sure. The third of those is rarer than the first two.
The child it lands with
The collector. The one with a shoebox of rocks, a jar of beetles, a shelf of feathers and skulls sorted into an order only they understand. That child is looking at a book about a boy who did exactly that and never stopped, and the recognition does something.
Also worth putting in front of a child who has already met the word evolution somewhere and filed it under monkeys. This is a chance to replace a cartoon with a mechanism before the cartoon sets.
Reading level, straight: the band of 3 to 6 is right for the sentences. The middle chapters, where the actual science sits, are denser than the ones on either side. A third grader will get through them and will get more out of them with you nearby.
One place to stop and talk
The best stop is not a page. It is a walk.
Pick an animal your child has actually seen with their own eyes. A moose, a magpie, a red squirrel, whatever is out the window. Then run the four steps on it out loud. Suppose this coming winter is brutal and only the ones with the thickest coats live through it. What do their young look like? Now next winter. Now the winter after that.
Then keep going, and let it get boring. That is the point of the exercise. A hundred winters. A thousand. Nothing dramatic happens in any single one of them, and at the end of it you have an animal that is not quite the same animal. Slow, dull, and completely relentless. Children expect big ideas to be exciting at every step, and this one is not, and knowing that is most of understanding it.
There is a second stop worth taking if your child is the thoughtful sort. When you get to the twenty year delay, ask what it cost him to wait, and whether waiting was the right call. There is no clean answer, which is what makes it a good question.
What to know going in
Say the obvious thing plainly. This is a book about evolution by natural selection, it explains the idea directly rather than hinting at it, and that is what the book is for. Nothing is hidden and nothing is being slipped past you. If you want to be the person who introduces that idea in your house, and in the order you choose, then read this one first and hand it over second. That is not a warning, it is a description, and it is the same thing I would say about any book carrying a big idea.
Beyond that there are two real things.
The first is grief and illness. Darwin was unwell for most of his adult life and the book does not tidy that away, and there is loss inside his family in the later chapters. It is handled gently and it is present.
The second is what the format does to the truth. Twenty years of grinding, careful, unglamorous work has to fit into a few pages, and a child can close this book believing the answer arrived on an island one afternoon and got written down that evening. That is the single most common thing a young reader takes away wrong from any book about Darwin. Five minutes of talking fixes it, and if you do not have those five minutes, the book has taught your child a slightly false picture of how science works.

It is $6.99 at Who Was Charles Darwin?. If you buy one book off the Stealth Science shelf this year, I would make it this one, and not because it is the best written. Natural selection is the single idea your child will meet again in every biology class from here to the end of school, and meeting it first as a story about a seasick young man with a notebook beats meeting it first as a chapter to be tested on.
