The Whole Year: 3rd Grade
3rd grade, the whole year, on one shelf. Third grade is multiplication, cursive, paragraphs, and the first year a child can carry a real book by themselves. This shelf has the workbook floor for every subject, the Story of the World as read-aloud history, and the series (Wings of Fire, Warriors) that a third grader reads fifteen deep. About three hundred dollars for the workbooks and the books, and you own every page.
How to use it: Math twenty-five minutes, language arts twenty-five, science and social studies on alternate days. Read The Story of the World aloud one chapter a week from the very beginning; nobody remembers ancient history and it is the best read-aloud on the shelf. Then hand them Wings of Fire and stand back. Science Comics are the science lesson a third grader chooses.
Two more things: the custom full grade is where we build this same year around your actual child instead of a grade level, and the $49 map is the first step of that. Not sure this is the right shelf? Five questions will tell you.

The Tarantula in My Purse: And 172 Other Wild Pets
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Biography / Memoir
Why it works: The Tarantula in My Purse gathers Jean Craighead George's family memories of living alongside owls, ducklings, crows, salamanders, a raccoon, a skunk, a tarantula, and many other wild animals. The comic domestic disruptions reveal species-specific behavior through a naturalist's firsthand stories rather than a conventional zoology survey.
One Day in the Woods
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: One Day in the Woods sends a girl into Teatown Woods at dawn, where her search for an ovenbird turns ordinary forest details into discoveries. The bird's behavior, the changing activity through the day, and the relationships within the forest reward the same patient noticing that drives her adventure.
Science Comics: Solar System: Our Place in Space
- Astronomy & Space
- Earth Science
- Comics / Graphic Narrative
Why it works: Science Comics: Solar System sends Sara, Jill, and their space-faring pets on a quest past Venus, Saturn, the Sun, and other neighbors. Acid clouds, icy rings, giant storms, and the solar system's dusty origin turn each stop into a distinct planetary environment rather than a decorative backdrop.
Science Comics: Dinosaurs: Fossils and Feathers
- Earth Science
- Life Science
- Comics / Graphic Narrative
Why it works: Science Comics: Dinosaurs follows a century and a half of fossil hunters as discoveries repeatedly change the dinosaurs people draw and describe. The history becomes an evidence mystery in which feathers, bones, field finds, and competing interpretations revise the scientific picture.
The Magic School Bus Inside a Hurricane
- Earth Science
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: Frizzle's class experiences a hurricane and a tornado from an impossible close-up vantage point. The dangerous weather becomes the adventure's setting and problem, giving readers a memorable way to compare storm structure, motion, and hazards.
