The Builder's Science Shelf

For the kid who takes things apart. Builders do not have an attention problem. They have a worksheet problem. Hand this child a reason to measure, wire, cut, or assemble and the reading and the math show up on their own, because now they are in the way of something that matters. This shelf is built in that order: the projects first, the subjects riding along.

How to use it: one project a week is the spine, from the activity book or the machine bible, and it gets a whole afternoon, not a slot. The picture books are for the younger builder and for reading aloud to the older one who claims to be too old for them (they are not). The biographies are the proof that this is a real way to be a person. When your child asks how something works, you both go look it up in Macaulay instead of you answering.

Why we teach this way is in Freedom Isn't a Building: Homeschooling by Experience. For the plan built around your actual child, that is the $49 map. Not sure this is the right shelf? Five questions will tell you.
