The Whole Year: 2nd Grade
2nd grade, the whole year, on one shelf. Second grade is the year reading stops being the lesson and becomes the tool. The workbooks on this shelf are the floor; the Boxcar Children box and the Magic Tree House box are the year, and a second grader who reads forty of those books has done more than second grade. About two hundred and fifty dollars for the workbooks and the books, and you own every page.
How to use it: Math twenty minutes, reading and writing twenty, science and social studies twice a week. Then one chapter book a week, read alone, and told back to you at lunch. That is narration and it is the whole of second-grade language arts if you let it be. The Magic School Bus picture books are the science lesson; the workbook pages are the practice.
Two more things: the custom full grade is where we build this same year around your actual child instead of a grade level, and the $49 map is the first step of that. Not sure this is the right shelf? Five questions will tell you.

A Rock Is Lively
- Earth Science
- Lyrical / Visual Picture Book
Why it works: Watercolor, poetic language, and close visual comparisons make rocks worth noticing before the book names their properties. Geology arrives through beauty and observation, not a chapter-and-quiz lesson.
A Butterfly Is Patient: (Nature Books for Kids, Children's Books Ages 3-5, Award Winning Children's Books)
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Lyrical / Visual Picture Book
Why it works: Poetic text and detailed watercolors invite a child to linger over real butterflies, their differences, and their habitats. The biology accumulates through looking and wondering, which is exactly the disguise this shelf promises.
Custom Full Grade — All 4 Core Subjects (per 12-week term)
Down, Down, Down: A Journey to the Bottom of the Sea
- Earth Science
- Life Science
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: Steve Jenkins structures the book as one continuous descent from the sunlit ocean surface to the seafloor, with each page revealing a stranger animal and a deeper zone. The scale-driven collage journey makes ocean depth and deep-sea adaptations feel like discoveries along a voyage rather than entries in a reference book.
The Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Expedition / Survival
Why it works: Frizzle drives the bus into the ocean for a submarine expedition from the surface toward the seafloor. The changing water conditions, marine organisms, habitats, and need for underwater access turn ocean science into the route and discoveries of the trip.
The Magic School Bus Inside the Earth
- Earth Science
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: The class's forgotten homework launches an impossible bus trip through Earth's crust toward the center and back out through a volcano. The route turns layers, rocks, internal heat, and volcanic activity into locations and obstacles in a geological adventure.
The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System
- Astronomy & Space
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: The bus becomes a spaceship and takes the class through the atmosphere, past the Moon, and into the wider solar system. Distance, planetary differences, and navigation become the scenery and complications of an interplanetary field-trip adventure.
