Making something is not the reward for finishing school. For a lot of kids it is the school. Cutting, measuring, following a sequence of instructions, and fixing it when it goes wrong are the same skills as a lab or a math problem, in a form a child will do voluntarily on a Saturday.
How to use it: let them follow the instructions exactly the first time and wreck them the second. The second one is where the learning is. Keep the supplies where they can reach them without asking.
For the child who thinks with their hands: The Builder's Science Shelf.
