Why this book counts

  • Life Science
  • Environment & Ecology
  • Expedition / Survival
  • Biography / Memoir
  • Nature Narrative / Field Discovery

Terri Roth's search for a wild Sumatran rhino and her work with Emi at the Cincinnati Zoo give conservation a face, a place, and a difficult goal. Rhino biology matters because saving the species depends on it.

The science inside

  • Conservation
  • Animals & Zoology
  • Scientific Discovery & Careers

Your child will meet:

  • Small endangered populations face a greater risk of extinction.
  • Field observation and zoo-based research can support wildlife conservation.
  • Successful reproduction is one part of rebuilding an endangered population.

Use it this way

Mark Sumatra and Cincinnati on a map, then make a problem-evidence-action chain: the rhino's conservation problem, what Terri observes or learns, and what the team does with that evidence. Ask what one scientist can and cannot solve alone.

Parent effort: Quick discussion

Terri Roth trudges through the thick, dark Sumatran jungle. She's looking for a rhinoceros that's been seen in the area. It's a rare Sumatran rhino, the world's smallest rhino and one of the most endangered mammals on the planet.Suddenly she spots a young female rhino through the tangle of ferns and trees. The stocky animal is covered in reddish hair, and her snout sports two stubby horns. The rhino walks right up to Terri. The scientist slowly reaches out her hand and touches the rhino's big nose. The wild rhino's curiosity and friendliness remind Terri of Emi, the female Sumatran rhino that lives at the Cincinnati Zoo where Terri works. Terri is working with Emi to help save Sumatran rhinos from extinction--one calf at a time.
