A robin turns up dead in a town park, and instead of burying it, a boy named Tony Isidoro treats it as a case. That is the book. Saddleboro is proud of being a clean town, the dead bird says otherwise, and Tony goes after the reason. It sits in Jean Craighead George's Eco Mysteries series, which are detective stories where the suspect list turns out to be a food web.
The science it actually teaches
This is a different animal from her wolf book. Julie of the Wolves teaches your child to read a creature. This one teaches your child to read a system, and to read it backward.
That is the real content here, and it is worth naming plainly, because it is a skill and not a topic. Tony starts with an effect. One bird, already dead, with nothing on it to say what did it. The cause is somewhere upstream, it is not in the same place as the body, and it may not even be the same kind of thing. Working from an effect back to a cause across that kind of gap is what an epidemiologist does, and what a toxicologist does, and it is almost never what a school science lesson asks for.
The clues are the lesson. The town park is crawling with ants in numbers nobody has seen. That is not an ant story. When a population goes vertical, the question is not what the ants gained, it is what quit eating them, and a child who takes that on will start asking it about every boom and every crash for the rest of their life.
The nights are silent because the frogs are not calling. Silence is harder to notice than noise, which is exactly why it is worth training a child on. Frogs go first. An amphibian takes water in through its skin, so whatever is in a pond is inside the frog before it is measurably inside anything else in the neighborhood. Frogs are the alarm, and the alarm in this town has already gone off and been missed.
The river is carrying a chemical. The dump is giving off fumes. Put those two beside a dead bird and your child meets the idea that carries the book, which is that a dose too weak to matter in the water does not stay weak. It gets taken up and held by whatever lives there, then concentrated again by whatever eats those, and again above that, until the animal at the top of a short food chain is carrying a load no instrument would ever have flagged in the river. That is biological magnification. It is normally a high school topic. Here it arrives as the solution to a murder, which is a better way to meet it.
And then the ending does something most children's books will not do. There is no factory owner twirling a mustache. The answer is a lot of ordinary people each doing one small ordinary thing, and all of it landing in the same place. Your child comes out of this book with the habit of asking what else changed instead of who is to blame, which is the difference between a person who can think about a system and a person who can only look for a culprit.
One more thing, and it is the reason this book earns its shelf twice. It is a book a family can walk out of the door and copy. Go find your own water. Listen in the evening and write down what you hear. Turn over rocks and count what is under them. Do it again in a month. Tony's method needs no equipment at all, and it works on your creek.
The child it lands with
The mystery reader who has run through the easy ones and is ready for a case that ends without a confession.
The child who takes things apart, and the one who keeps asking why after you have already answered twice.
And the child who likes nature but has gone flat on nature books, because most of them only admire things. This one has a problem in it.
One place to stop and talk
Stop when the ants show up, before Tony gets anywhere, and ask one question: why are there suddenly so many ants?
Your child will say something is helping them. Something quit eating them. Let them work out what.
What to know going in
Three things, and none of them is graphic.
A bird dies at the start and the book never moves on from it. It gets picked up, looked at, and handled as evidence. There is more loss stacked behind it, the frogs gone quiet and the river carrying something it should not. Nothing here is gory. It is steadily sad, and a tender child will feel it.
The second is the one actually worth thinking about before you hand it over. The answer this book arrives at is that ordinary people did it, in an ordinary town, doing things nobody thought twice about. There is nobody to hate at the end. Some children find that clarifying and some find it heavy, and if yours is already the one lying awake about the planet, read it next to them and be ready to talk about what a person can genuinely do on a Tuesday.
The third is about the band and not the content. The store tags it 4 to 7 and that is honest about the reading level, but it is a slower book than a mystery cover suggests, with chemical names and town business in it. A fourth grader who wants a fast whodunit may stall out. A fourth grader who likes finding things out will be fine, and will probably want the rest of the series.
