A typical animal cell is roughly a hundredth of a millimeter across. You cannot draw that to scale next to anything a child has ever held, so almost every book about cells quietly gives up and prints a cutaway with eleven labels pointing at it. Your child learns the labels. Your child does not learn the cell.
This book takes the other road. It shrinks a character down and walks him around in there, and it starts at the beginning, with the earliest cells on Earth, before it gets to the plant and animal cells in front of us now.
The series conceit takes one sentence: a super scientist who can change his own size explains one topic in comic panels. That is the whole format, it is the same in every Max Axiom title, and the rest of this note is about cells. Amber J Keyser is the author our store lists. Our store bands it at grades 4 to 8.
The science it actually teaches
This is the reason it sits on our Stealth Science shelf, and it is the reason I would put this one in a child's hands before the other three biology titles in the series.
The first thing it carries is scale, and scale is the whole battle. A child who has swum among molecules for twenty pages has a feel for how small a cell is and how much smaller the things inside it are. That feel is not a fact you can test them on and it is worth more than the facts, because every later idea in biology sits on top of it. Genes are small because cells are small. Things move across a membrane because they are small. You cannot get there from a labeled cutaway.
The second is that the cell is the unit. Everything alive is made of them, and the living things that are not made of many of them are made of exactly one. That single sentence reorganizes a child's whole picture of biology, and it is what makes the word cell mean something instead of naming a picture in a book.
The third is the plant and animal split, which the store's own copy puts front and center. Both kinds have a membrane, a nucleus, cytoplasm and mitochondria. One kind also has a rigid wall around the outside and green bodies inside that the other kind has never had. That difference is not trivia. It is why a plant can stand up without a skeleton, and why a plant can feed itself while your child has to go to the kitchen. Hold onto the green bodies, because they are the doorway to the photosynthesis book.
The fourth is that the parts have jobs. The membrane decides what comes in. The mitochondria release the energy. The nucleus holds the instructions. That last one is the hinge for the whole set. A child who leaves this book knowing the nucleus is where the instruction set lives has somewhere to put the next book.
Be clear-eyed about what a short comic can hold. This is a tour of cell biology, not a course in it. It will name organelles it has no room to explain, and the honest job of the book is to make your child want the explanation later, not to supply it now.
The child it lands with
Nine or ten years old, reads comics fluently and chapter books grudgingly, and has already been handed a cell diagram at some point and remembered nothing from it. That child is not bad at biology. That child was given a map with no territory.
The other one is at the far end of the same room: the child who reads ahead and asks questions you cannot answer. This will not stretch them for long, and it will hand them the vocabulary they need to go further, which is most of what a ten year old is actually missing.
One place to stop and talk
Stop at the first picture of a nucleus and cover the caption with your thumb. What would a cell even need to keep in there, under guard, in the middle?
Take whatever answer you get. The one you are steering toward is instructions, and once your child has said that word out loud themselves, the genetics book has somewhere to land.
What to know going in
Two things, and neither of them is frightening.
The book starts with the earliest cells on Earth, so it opens in deep time and treats life as having a very long history that began with single cells. That is standard biology and it is stated as fact, not argued. If your family handles origins in a particular way, you want to know that before your child is halfway through rather than after, and you want to be nearby the first time it comes up.
The other is the band. Our store says grades 4 to 8, and the artwork will make a fourth grader confident while the vocabulary quietly does not. Membrane, organelle, cytoplasm and mitochondria all arrive early, and a comic gives a word about one panel of runway before it starts using it as though you already know it. Read it beside a nine year old. Hand it to a twelve year old and walk away.

The order I would use is this one, then photosynthesis, then genes, then ecosystems. Start at the smallest thing and work outward, which is the order the subject was built in.
