A full color graphic novel about where dogs came from, narrated by a friendly mutt who has lost his ball and works out the whole history of his species while he goes looking for it. Andy Hirsch wrote it and drew it, and it is part of the Science Comics line. Our store bands it at grades 4 to 8.
The science it actually teaches
This is the reason it sits on our Stealth Science shelf. Your child thinks they are reading a comic about dogs. What is on the page is a first course in genetics and selection.
It opens by taking apart the sentence everybody says, which is that dogs came from wolves. What it puts in place of that is common ancestry: dogs and the wolves alive right now came out of the same older population, so a wolf is a cousin rather than a grandparent. That correction is the whole difference between a folk fact and a scientific one, and most adults never got it.
Then it does the mechanism. Traits are carried by genes, genes come in versions, and a version can sit hidden behind another one for generations before it turns up in a puppy. That is dominant and recessive, worked out on coat and color and ear, with pictures, at an age when a child usually meets the same idea as a grid on a worksheet and never connects it to an animal.
Then selection. A breeder choosing which two dogs have puppies is running the same arithmetic that weather and food supply and predators run on their own, only faster and on purpose. Artificial selection and natural selection are one process with a different hand on it. A child who gets that out of a dog book has the spine of evolutionary biology already standing.
The book also asks how much of the difference between a Chihuahua and a Saint Bernard is really there. The answer is that it is one species the whole way across, and the size and the shape and the coat were all possible inside it before anyone started choosing. That is variation, and it is the thing selection acts on.
And it does not stop at the flattering part. Breeds are recent. Narrowing a population down to produce a particular face or coat concentrates the inherited problems along with the looks, and the book is willing to say so about animals children love.
The child it lands with
The one who will read a comic and will not read a chapter book, and who you keep being told will grow out of it. The one who already knows every breed and calls them out of the car window at a distance. The ten or eleven year old sitting between picture books and real biology with nothing in the middle to stand on.
It also lands with the parent who never got genetics the first time around and would rather learn it from a talking mutt than from a textbook. There is no shame in that and it is a good reason to read it together.
One place to stop and talk
Stop where the book gets to the Chihuahua and the Saint Bernard, and ask your child how two animals that different can be the same species.
Most children say people bred them that way, which is true and is not an answer. Push once more: bred them how? Nobody added anything to a dog. Nobody put length into the legs or curl into the coat. Every one of those differences was already possible inside dogs before a single breeder went to work, and what the breeders did was one thing, over and over, for a very long time. They chose which puppies got to have puppies of their own.
Sit with that for a while, because a child who sees it here will see it everywhere afterwards. Choosing does not create anything. It sorts what is already there. Whether the hand doing the choosing belongs to a breeder who wants a shorter nose, or to a winter that only lets the thick coated ones through, the arithmetic underneath is the same arithmetic running at a different speed. Once your child has that, the rest of evolutionary biology stops being a mystery and starts being obvious, and they got it out of a comic about a lost ball.
What to know going in
Nothing frightening happens in this book. No death, no peril, no cruelty on the page. The caution here is a different kind, and there are two of them.
The first is that evolution and common ancestry are not a chapter you can skip. They are the spine. Every explanation in the book runs through deep time and descent with change, from where dogs came from to why a Great Dane and a terrier are the same animal. If your family handles that subject a particular way, buy it knowing exactly what you are buying, and sit next to your child while they read it rather than handing it over and leaving the room. I would still put it in the house. I would not put it in the house by accident.
The second is the band. The store says 4 to 8 and the artwork says younger, which is a trap. A comic looks like an easy read and the first stretch is one. The genetics middle is not. There are diagrams in there that a fourth grader will need you for, and a child who stalls has not failed at anything, they have simply met real content early. Read the middle alongside them, or wait a year and let them have it alone.
One smaller thing. You cannot teach inheritance without talking about which animals have offspring with which other animals, so breeding is handled plainly and biologically. It is not lurid and it is not coy. For most houses that is a non-issue. For a few it is a conversation you would rather pick the timing of, so pick it.

This is the most expensive book in this set at $13.99, and the format is the reason: Science Comics: Dogs: From Predator to Protector is a full color graphic novel, not a paperback chapter book. Buy it for the two of you rather than for your child alone. The genetics middle wants an adult in the chair, and the parent who never got inheritance the first time round is half of why the money is worth spending.
