Your child has probably already had the Pluto argument with somebody. Planet, not a planet, who decided, and why does anyone get to decide. This book is not about that fight, and it settles it in passing anyway.
What it is about is New Horizons: a spacecraft that left Earth in 2006, flew for nine and a half years, and in July 2015 got the first close look anyone has ever had at Pluto and its moons. Mary Kay Carson tells it through the people who built it and flew it, with the real pictures printed large.
One detail sets the tone for the whole thing. The spacecraft launched toward the ninth planet and arrived at a dwarf planet. Nothing about the machine changed. The category did.
The science it actually teaches
This is the most mechanical book on our Stealth Science shelf, and that is the recommendation.
Start with the constraint that shapes everything: there was no way to stop. Slowing down at the far end would have cost fuel nobody could carry, so the plan was a flyby. Nine and a half years of travel bought a few hours of close looking, at speed, once. Every instrument had a schedule written years in advance, and if the schedule was wrong there was no going around for another pass. A child who has only ever met science as an experiment you can repeat is about to meet the other kind.
Then the part that reliably lands. Nobody was driving. A radio signal takes hours to cross that distance, each way, so no one on Earth could steer or correct anything while it happened. The encounter ran off a script loaded in advance. By the time any word of trouble arrived, the trouble was hours old and the spacecraft was already past.
The data came home slowly too, at a few kilobits a second, which is roughly a bad dial-up modem three billion miles away. The flyby was over in a day. Sending back what it recorded took more than a year. Put that in front of a child who has never waited for anything to load.
Power is the next one, and it is a rare chance to talk about nuclear anything without a mushroom cloud in the room. Sunlight out there is far too weak for solar panels. The spacecraft runs on heat from decaying plutonium, converted to electricity, which is why it still works and why the launch itself was argued over.
There is orbital mechanics you can feel: the craft swung past Jupiter on the way and stole a little of Jupiter's motion, which cost nothing and cut years off the trip. Gravity as free fuel is a hard idea, and a diagram plus a sentence about it here does better than most textbook treatments.
And then what it actually found, which is the payoff. Pluto is not a dead rock. Mountains made of water ice. Nitrogen ice that flows like a glacier. A surface too young and too smooth in places to be the frozen leftover everyone expected, under a hazy reddish sky. Something that small should have gone cold and still billions of years ago, and it did not, and nobody has completely nailed down why.
The child it lands with
Space books at this level mostly sell wonder. This one sells procedure.
So it is for the child who saw the famous picture of Pluto and immediately wanted to know how the picture got taken, not what it means. The child who asks how before what. The child who likes constraints, budgets and schedules more than they will ever admit.
It is a poor match for a child who needs a story with people in it to keep turning pages. The tension in this book is a schedule, and either that grips your child or it does not.
One place to stop and talk
Stop at the flyby itself, at the hours when the team on Earth had nothing coming in.
Everything had already happened. Whatever the spacecraft did or failed to do was finished and unchangeable, and the news of it was still in transit. Nobody could act. Put the question flatly: what do you do with those hours?
Every engineer has an answer to that and none of them is comfortable. It is a real part of the job, and I cannot think of another book for a ten-year-old that shows it.
What to know going in
Nothing here is frightening and nobody dies. The honest cautions are different in kind, and there are three.
It dates. This is a paperback reissue of a book written when the Pluto pictures were new, and the spacecraft has flown on since. Your child will finish it and want to know what happened next, and the book cannot tell them.
The reading level is not what the tag says. The 5 to 8 band is right for sentence difficulty and low for content: orbital mechanics, radioisotope power, data rates, instrument design. A confident fifth grader will manage it with you in the room. A struggling reader will stall on the sidebars, and the sidebars are where a lot of the best material is.
And there is no plot. A child who needs a narrative to pull them along may put it down at page thirty. That is a mismatch, not a failure, and it is worth knowing before you buy.
Where to get it
Mission to Pluto is $10.99. Buy it with a screen within reach, because the first thing your child will want after the flyby chapter is to see those images at full size and the page cannot do that. I would not start the Stealth Science shelf here unless you already have a space child in the house. If you do, this is the one that shows them the work instead of the wonder, and there is not much else at this age that does.
