Every other book in this series is about a thing. Sound. Magnets. Volcanoes. Cells. Pick one up and there is a phenomenon in the world sitting behind it, waiting to be got at.
This one is about a procedure.
That is worth stopping on, because it changes what the book is for and when you hand it over. Max Axiom is the same superhero scientist in the same comic panels, and the frame here is a river about to flood his city. He uses two things to stop it: his powers, and the scientific method. The powers are the fun. The method is the point.
The science it actually teaches
It teaches how a claim gets earned, which is the least glamorous subject in science and the one everything else rests on.
It starts with a real problem. Not a worksheet question with an answer at the back, but a river rising, which is how science actually starts for most of the people who do it. Something has gone wrong or something is strange, and the wrongness is the question. Children are taught to begin with a question handed to them, and a book that begins with a situation instead is doing them a service.
Then research before experiment. Find out what is already known. This is the step children skip most, because starting from scratch feels more like science than reading does, and it is almost always the expensive mistake. Somebody has usually answered half your question already.
Then the hypothesis, and this is the heart of the thing. A hypothesis is not a hope and it is not a prediction of what you would like to be true. It is a statement built so that reality can knock it over. If nothing could possibly happen that would prove you wrong, you have not made a hypothesis, you have made a wish. Handing a nine year old that distinction is worth more than a term of vocabulary lists.
Then the experiment, which is a question you build out of physical parts. You arrange the conditions on purpose so that the answer cannot be argued with afterwards.
Then analysis, which children reliably confuse with data. Collecting numbers is not the finding. Reading what the numbers say, including when they say something you did not want, is the finding.
Five steps, named plainly, wrapped in a flood. For a child who has been doing science as a series of activities with no spine, this book supplies the spine.
The child it lands with
This is the wrong first book for a child who is not yet curious about anything in particular. The method is a tool, and a tool with nothing to work on is just a shape.
It is the right book for the child who has already got interested in something and is now getting sloppy about it. The one who runs an experiment, changes three things at once, and announces a result. The one who tests a thing twice, gets two different answers, and picks the answer they liked. That child does not need more enthusiasm. They need a procedure, and they will take a procedure from a comic book character long before they will take it from you.
It also does honest work for a child heading into a science fair, a co-op project, or any situation where somebody is going to ask how they know.
One place to stop and talk
Stop at the hypothesis and ask one question: what would have to happen for this to be wrong?
That is the whole subject in nine words. A child who can answer it has understood something most adults have not.
What to know going in
The honest weakness of this book is the honest weakness of teaching the scientific method at all, and a comic makes it sharper rather than softer.
Real science is not a five step ladder. It is a mess of hunches that fail, results nobody can repeat, and long stretches where the data says nothing at all. The tidy sequence is a teaching model, useful the way training wheels are useful, and it is not a description of what happens in a laboratory. A child taught the ladder as the truth can be genuinely thrown later, when their own experiment refuses to behave and they conclude they are bad at science rather than that science is like this.
The superhero frame makes that worse in one specific way. Max's hypothesis works. He runs the test, the answer arrives, the river is handled. Nothing in the book fails, because a story with a superhero in it cannot afford forty pages of not knowing. That is the opposite of what a hypothesis feels like from the inside, and it is the single thing you may have to say out loud yourself, because the book will not say it for you.
Nothing here is frightening. A flooding city is the peril and it stays at the level of a comic. The store bands the book at grades 4 to 8. The reading is easy inside that band and the ideas are not, so a strong young reader can finish it in half an hour and take away a list to memorise, which is precisely the failure mode this book is supposed to fix.

Buy it second. That is not a sales instruction, it is a sequencing one. Start your child with a Max Axiom title about an actual phenomenon, something on the Stealth Science shelf they can get their hands on, and let them get properly interested and properly sloppy first. Adventures in Sound is a good candidate, because the follow up costs a rubber band. Then bring this one out, when there is finally something for the method to be used on.
