Fun without rigor is just play. Rigor without joy kills the love.

There are two traps. One is the flashy "fun" curriculum that's all theme and no substance — the kid has a great time and learns nothing solid. The other is the joyless worksheet mountain that hits the standards and crushes the love of learning to do it.

• Soft, unstructured "do what feels right" with no real scope or sequence.
• Or rigid, joyless drilling that meets the standard and loses the kid.
• Parents shouldn't have to choose between engaged and educated.
