Stealth Science

Why this book counts

  • Life Science
  • Earth Science
  • Engineering & Technology
  • Story / Adventure
  • Expedition / Survival

A marine biologist's captivity aboard the Nautilus turns submarine technology, undersea exploration, giant squid, and seafloor phenomena into the route of the adventure. The science drives the wonder even when Verne crosses into invention.

The science inside

  • Oceans & Marine Life
  • Engineering & Design
  • Earth Systems & Geology

Your child will meet:

  • Underwater exploration depends on technology that can withstand pressure and sustain people.
  • Ocean habitats contain organisms adapted to conditions unlike those on land.
  • Science fiction can begin with real principles and extend them beyond current evidence.

Use it this way

Track a real-or-invented ledger while reading. Once per chapter, choose a submarine feature, marine organism, or seafloor event; predict which column it belongs in, then verify the claim with a reliable modern source and note what Verne got right.

Parent effort: Simple activity

Prompted by disturbing reports of an enormous sea monster, marine biologist Pierre Aronnax joins an expedition to find and destroy it. After barely surviving an attack on the creature, the voyagers discover that their quarry is in fact a remarkably advanced submarine, the Nautilus . Its creator, Captain Nemo, is driven by a thirst for knowledge and by a hatred of civilization--and he refuses to let his "guests" leave. As Aronnax and his companions plot to escape, they are taken on a whirlwind tour of undersea marvels, including volcanoes, a giant squid, and the ruins of Atlantis. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is just as gripping and fantastical a read as it was a century and a half ago, when Jules Verne first imagined traveling beyond the bounds of the possible.
