Third Grade

Third grade is multiplication, paragraphs, and the first year a child can carry a real book alone. It is also the year the wheels come off for a lot of families, because the work gets longer and the novelty is gone. The fix is not more workbook pages. It is a shorter, steadier day and better books.

How to use it: twenty-five minutes of math, twenty-five of language arts, science and social studies on alternate days. Read history aloud, one chapter a week, from the beginning of the world. Then hand them a series they choose and get out of the way.

The whole year in one place: The Whole Year: 3rd Grade. Struggling with a specific piece? Five questions.

Cece Loves Science: Push and Pull

  • Physics & Energy
  • Engineering & Technology
  • Maker / Problem-Solving

Why it works: Cece Loves Science: Push and Pull gives the class a concrete design challenge: build a dog-treat dispenser that uses both opposing forces. Cece's team has to apply the force idea, create a device, and see whether it works, so the concept carries the leveled-reader story.

  • Astronomy & Space
  • Physics & Energy
  • Story / Adventure

Why it works: A scientist, his daughter, and the super-computer Cosmos take George through outer space in an adventure that stops for real explanations of the universe and black holes. The fictional transport gives cosmology a plot and a sense of scale while the factual passages supply the science.
