Preschool is mostly reading aloud, and that is not a shortcut. A four-year-old who is read to every day arrives at kindergarten with a bigger vocabulary than one who did worksheets, and the couch is a better desk. This shelf is the picture books, the counting and letter games, and the few workbooks that are actually gentle enough for a child this age.

How to use it: fifteen minutes of something formal is plenty, and it does not have to happen every day. Read three books, count something real, go outside. If your child is asking to write letters, follow that; if they are not, they will. Nobody has ever arrived at college unable to hold a pencil.
