Picture Books & Read-Alouds
Picture books are not just for little kids, and they are not filler. A good one teaches more science in thirty-two pages than a chapter of a textbook, and a great one gets read a hundred times without anybody complaining. This shelf is the award winners, the nature and science books that sneak the learning in, and the ones that hold up to the hundredth reading.
How to use it: read them out loud, above your child's reading level, for far longer than feels necessary. A first grader can understand a book they could never decode, and that gap is where vocabulary comes from. Keep a stack on the table, not on a shelf.
More of this: Stealth Science is a whole shelf of books that teach science without being science books.
