Middle School
Middle school is the band everybody skips, and it is where most families get scared. Pre-algebra shows up, writing gets graded on argument instead of neatness, and your child stops wanting to be read to. Almost every homeschool catalog thins out right here. This one does not.
How to use it: one math book, ninety minutes of real work a day, and reading that respects them. A twelve-year-old who reads The Hunger Games in two days is telling you exactly what school should look like this year. Give them the series, then give them the books it was built from, and the literature takes care of itself.
The whole year on one shelf: 6th, 7th, 8th. For the reader: The Series Reader and The Hunger Games Shelf.

The Snake Scientist
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Biography / Memoir
Why it works: The Snake Scientist follows Robert Mason into Manitoba forests where tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes emerge from underground caverns after winter dormancy. Fifteen years of watching the enormous spring gathering make one mysterious behavior the spine of a working zoologist's field story.
The Tornado Scientist: Seeing Inside Severe Storms
- Earth Science
- Physics & Energy
- Biography / Memoir
Why it works: The Tornado Scientist rides with Robin Tanamachi and her team as they aim truck-mounted Doppler radar toward severe storms across the American heartland. The race for better warning time links risky field positioning to radar measurements, computer models, mathematics, physics, and the still-open question of tornado formation.
Condor Comeback
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Expedition / Survival
Why it works: Condor Comeback reports from inside the decades-long effort to breed, treat, study, and return California condors to the wild. Scientists' investigation of lead poisoning and their work with individual chicks turn population recovery into a field story with uncertain stakes.
The Octopus Scientists
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Expedition / Survival
Why it works: Readers accompany working scientists as they investigate octopus intelligence and behavior in the ocean. Questions, field observations, setbacks, and interpretations turn cephalopod biology into an active expedition rather than a static animal profile.
The Mighty Mars Rovers: The Incredible Adventures of Spirit and Opportunity
- Astronomy & Space
- Earth Science
- Expedition / Survival
Why it works: Spirit and Opportunity have a mission, a deadline, mechanical limits, and years of surprises. Following the rovers and lead scientist Steven Squyres turns Martian geology, water evidence, and robotic engineering into the causes of the suspense.
The Quest for the Tree Kangaroo: An Expedition to the Cloud Forest of New Guinea
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Expedition / Survival
Why it works: The Quest for the Tree Kangaroo joins scientists in Papua New Guinea's cloud forest as they search for the elusive Matschie's tree kangaroo. Tracking an animal that looks part bear, monkey, and kangaroo turns anatomy, field signs, and habitat into the evidence that moves the expedition forward.
