Middle School

Middle school is the band everybody skips, and it is where most families get scared. Pre-algebra shows up, writing gets graded on argument instead of neatness, and your child stops wanting to be read to. Almost every homeschool catalog thins out right here. This one does not.

How to use it: one math book, ninety minutes of real work a day, and reading that respects them. A twelve-year-old who reads The Hunger Games in two days is telling you exactly what school should look like this year. Give them the series, then give them the books it was built from, and the literature takes care of itself.

The whole year on one shelf: 6th, 7th, 8th. For the reader: The Series Reader and The Hunger Games Shelf.

King of the Wind

  • Life Science
  • Nature Narrative / Field Discovery

Why it works: Sham's journey matters because his speed, disputed pedigree, and eventual place in Thoroughbred ancestry change how people value him. The horse adventure gives heredity and selective breeding a personal stake, while legendary language about bloodlines must not be mistaken for a guarantee about an individual animal.

Sunwing

  • Life Science
  • Environment & Ecology
  • Nature Narrative / Field Discovery

Why it works: Shade's search for his father moves through a warm enclosed bat forest, an insect food supply, daylight exposure, human removal of sleeping bats, predators, and a southern jungle. Those habitat pressures support the quest, while prophecy, animal armies, and a plan for eternal night remain supernatural fantasy.

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH

  • Life Science
  • Engineering & Technology
  • Story / Adventure

Why it works: A field mouse's urgent need to move her sick child leads to rats whose laboratory past produced impossible intelligence and a technology-rich colony. The rats' engineered solution drives the rescue, while their altered minds and long lives remain a thought-provoking fantasy rather than a biological claim.

Silverwing

  • Life Science
  • Environment & Ecology
  • Nature Narrative / Field Discovery

Why it works: Shade's long winter migration gives the bat colony a route, seasonal goal, storm hazard, predators, and an urgent need to reunite. Real bat behavior shapes the journey, while speaking bats, mystical gifts, and fantasy species relationships remain inventions of the novel.

Whale Done

  • Earth Science
  • Life Science
  • Maker / Problem-Solving

Why it works: A dead whale that explodes before its cause of death is known and a second case involving tons of stolen sand pull Teddy and a veterinarian into a Malibu investigation. The linked mysteries make marine evidence, water samples, whale protection, and sand as a finite material necessary to identify wrongdoing.

All Ears

  • Life Science
  • Environment & Ecology
  • Story / Adventure

Why it works: All Ears gives Teddy Fitzroy two linked investigations: finding a missing African elephant and clearing a friend accused of damaging equipment at a wind-farm site that would replace wildlife habitat. Elephant behavior, human-wildlife conflict, habitat loss, and the tradeoff between renewable energy and local conservation repeatedly determine which clues and motives make sense.

Ape Escape

  • Life Science
  • Environment & Ecology
  • Story / Adventure

Why it works: Ape Escape sends Teddy Fitzroy across Rwanda, the Serengeti, and Zanzibar to rescue a stolen baby gorilla from a wildlife-trafficking network. Gorilla needs, African habitats, poaching, and field clues set the route and urgency, making conservation science inseparable from the international chase.

Bear Bottom

  • Earth Science
  • Life Science
  • Story / Adventure

Why it works: Bear Bottom brings Teddy Fitzroy to a bison ranch near Yellowstone where endangered bison vanish and a grizzly's break-in complicates a necklace mystery. Bison conservation, bear behavior, scat evidence, and Yellowstone's geothermal hazards supply clues and risks that Teddy must interpret correctly.

Big Game

  • Life Science
  • Environment & Ecology
  • Story / Adventure

Why it works: Big Game makes a pregnant, endangered greater one-horned rhinoceros the target at the center of Teddy Fitzroy's zoo mystery. Rhino biology, the value placed on horn, poaching pressure, and protective management explain both the stakes and the suspects' possible motives.

Lion Down

  • Life Science
  • Environment & Ecology
  • Maker / Problem-Solving

Why it works: Teddy's mystery begins when a mountain lion is blamed for a dog's death and a public campaign demands that the cat be hunted. Solving the case requires separating accusation from animal evidence, placing wildlife behavior and management inside the suspense and comedy.

Panda-Monium

  • Life Science
  • Environment & Ecology
  • Maker / Problem-Solving

Why it works: Panda-Monium makes Teddy Fitzroy solve the disappearance of FunJungle's rare new giant panda, Li Ping, while zoo-animal behavior keeps producing clues and complications. The mystery's comic action depends on distinguishing natural and learned behavior and on understanding why a panda's care, ownership, and transport are unusually constrained.
