Late Elementary
Fourth and fifth grade, all in one place. This is the stretch where the work gets long enough to need a plan, and where a child either becomes a reader or decides they are not one. Both of those are on this shelf: the workbooks that carry the basics, and the novels and series that make a kid forget they are doing school.
How to use it: ninety minutes of real work, four days a week, and use the fifth for a project or a long read. Pick one math book and finish it. If math is the fight in your house, the problem is almost always one missing piece underneath, not a child who is bad at math.
Prefer a single shelf per grade? 4th, 5th. Or take five questions.

Whale Done
- Earth Science
- Life Science
- Maker / Problem-Solving
Why it works: A dead whale that explodes before its cause of death is known and a second case involving tons of stolen sand pull Teddy and a veterinarian into a Malibu investigation. The linked mysteries make marine evidence, water samples, whale protection, and sand as a finite material necessary to identify wrongdoing.
All Ears
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: All Ears gives Teddy Fitzroy two linked investigations: finding a missing African elephant and clearing a friend accused of damaging equipment at a wind-farm site that would replace wildlife habitat. Elephant behavior, human-wildlife conflict, habitat loss, and the tradeoff between renewable energy and local conservation repeatedly determine which clues and motives make sense.
Ape Escape
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: Ape Escape sends Teddy Fitzroy across Rwanda, the Serengeti, and Zanzibar to rescue a stolen baby gorilla from a wildlife-trafficking network. Gorilla needs, African habitats, poaching, and field clues set the route and urgency, making conservation science inseparable from the international chase.
Bear Bottom
- Earth Science
- Life Science
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: Bear Bottom brings Teddy Fitzroy to a bison ranch near Yellowstone where endangered bison vanish and a grizzly's break-in complicates a necklace mystery. Bison conservation, bear behavior, scat evidence, and Yellowstone's geothermal hazards supply clues and risks that Teddy must interpret correctly.
Big Game
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: Big Game makes a pregnant, endangered greater one-horned rhinoceros the target at the center of Teddy Fitzroy's zoo mystery. Rhino biology, the value placed on horn, poaching pressure, and protective management explain both the stakes and the suspects' possible motives.
Lion Down
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Maker / Problem-Solving
Why it works: Teddy's mystery begins when a mountain lion is blamed for a dog's death and a public campaign demands that the cat be hunted. Solving the case requires separating accusation from animal evidence, placing wildlife behavior and management inside the suspense and comedy.
Panda-Monium
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Maker / Problem-Solving
Why it works: Panda-Monium makes Teddy Fitzroy solve the disappearance of FunJungle's rare new giant panda, Li Ping, while zoo-animal behavior keeps producing clues and complications. The mystery's comic action depends on distinguishing natural and learned behavior and on understanding why a panda's care, ownership, and transport are unusually constrained.
Tyrannosaurus Wrecks
- Earth Science
- Life Science
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: Tyrannosaurus Wrecks gives Teddy Fitzroy two linked mysteries: a five-hundred-pound tyrannosaur skull vanishes from an active dig, and illegally traded reptiles lead toward ecological harm. Paleontologists, excavation practice, fossil ownership, anaconda biology, and animal trafficking supply the real-world systems behind the clues and suspects.
Belly Up
- Life Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: Belly Up begins when Teddy Fitzroy doubts the official claim that FunJungle's hippopotamus died naturally. Evaluating the animal's condition, behavior, care, and possible causes of death turns zoo biology and evidence testing into the machinery of a murder mystery.
Waste of Space
- Astronomy & Space
- Engineering & Technology
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: A poisoning traps Dash's investigation among the residents and systems of Moon Base Alpha while the culprit tries to stop him. The closed lunar setting makes exposure evidence, life-support dependence, and the limits of an invented colony part of solving the mystery.
George and the Big Bang
- Astronomy & Space
- Physics & Energy
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: George's attempt to stop sabotage at a Swiss experiment makes questions about the universe's beginning essential to solving the adventure. Essays by physicists and a reverse-order Big Bang graphic sequence place real cosmology beside the fictional conspiracy.
George's Cosmic Treasure Hunt
- Astronomy & Space
- Engineering & Technology
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: George and Annie's galaxy-spanning search for the source of an alien warning turns space travel and the search for life into the route of the adventure. Essays based on Stephen Hawking's work and astronaut interviews anchor the imaginary quest in real questions about exploration.
Poached
- Life Science
- Maker / Problem-Solving
Why it works: Poached puts Teddy Fitzroy inside a comic FunJungle mystery involving a missing koala and a zoo full of possible clues. The investigation repeatedly asks readers to use animal facts and behavior to test human stories, so zoology participates in solving the whodunit.
Journey Through Ash and Smoke (Ranger in Time #5)
- Earth Science
- Expedition / Survival
Why it works: A threatened eruption turns Ranger's trip to Viking-age Iceland into a rescue journey through ash, smoke, and difficult terrain. Volcanic hazards determine the characters' route and urgency, while the time-traveling search-and-rescue dog remains an explicit fictional device.
Hurricane Katrina Rescue (Ranger in Time #8)
- Earth Science
- Environment & Ecology
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: Hurricane Katrina Rescue sends a time-traveling rescue dog into New Orleans as wind, rain, a levee breach, and rising floodwater separate Clare from her family. The storm and flood-control failure keep changing the route to safety, so the hazard mechanics carry the rescue plot.
Space Case
- Astronomy & Space
- Engineering & Technology
- Story / Adventure
Why it works: A scientist's death outside Moon Base Alpha becomes a locked-environment mystery because every resident depends on helmets, habitat rules, and limited access to the lunar surface. Dash must test an apparently simple equipment explanation inside a speculative colony where real lunar constraints create the clues.
