Early Elementary

First through third grade, all in one place. These are the years a child goes from sounding out words to reading a chapter book under the covers, and from counting on fingers to multiplying. Everything on this shelf is picked for that stretch: the workbooks that move at the right pace, the first books a child finishes alone, and the read-alouds that stay ahead of their reading level on purpose.

How to use it: an hour to ninety minutes a day is a full load at these ages, and shorter is usually better than longer. Do math while they are fresh. Read to them every day, past the point where they can read to themselves, because listening comprehension runs years ahead of decoding and that gap is where the vocabulary comes from.

Prefer a single shelf per grade? 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Not sure where your child sits? Five questions.

Ada Lace Sees Red

  • Human Body & Health
  • Physics & Energy
  • Maker / Problem-Solving

Why it works: Ada Lace Sees Red combines Ada's stalled competition robot with an art-class conflict about color and perception. Gears, robot testing, color theory, and color blindness converge in the solution, allowing an engineering problem and a human-vision difference to reshape Ada's relationships as well as her design.

Grumplets and Pests

  • General / Multiple Sciences
  • Maker / Problem-Solving

Why it works: A run of inexplicably grumpy magical creatures gives Zoey and Sassafras a pattern to investigate before their summer deteriorates further. The mystery advances through observations, comparisons, research, and revised ideas, so inquiry is the route to the solution rather than an inserted lesson.

  • Engineering & Technology
  • Story / Adventure

Why it works: Ada Lace, on the Case gives a third-grade scientist-inventor a dognapping mystery that she pursues with Nina and a growing collection of gadgets. Merhorses and Bubbles: Zoey and Sassafras #3

  • Environment & Ecology
  • Maker / Problem-Solving

Why it works: Danger to magical merhorses turns a troubled local stream into a mystery that Zoey and Sassafras must solve with observations and experiments. Aquatic ecology and inquiry determine whether the creatures can be saved, while the merhorses and their biology remain deliberately fictional.

Bips and Roses

  • Life Science
  • Story / Adventure

Why it works: Bips and Roses gives Zoey, Pip, and Sassafras a failing crop of magical forest roses that newborn hippogriffs will need for food.
