Here is the argument for this one, and it is not the writing or the pictures. Read the book, then take your child and a trowel into the yard and find out whether the book was telling the truth. Ten minutes. No equipment past the trowel and a bit of damp paper. Almost every claim in it can be confirmed or knocked down by a six year old with dirt under her fingernails, and that makes it the most testable book on this shelf.
The story around it is small and does its job. Vivian French gives you a boy who thinks worms are disgusting and a grandmother who gardens and knows better, and the afternoon changes his mind. Our store bands it K to 2. There are instructions in the back for becoming a wormologist.
The science it actually teaches
The idea holding the whole book up is that a worm is not a resident of the soil. It is a manufacturer of it. That is why it sits on our Stealth Science shelf.
That is a genuine reframe and it happens to be true. Soil goes in one end of the animal and comes out the other, changed. What comes out is a cast, and a cast is the coil of fine soil you find sitting on top of a lawn in the morning. Your child can hold one. It is a piece of ground that has been through an animal, and it is why gardeners talk about worms the way they do. Nobody is being sentimental. The ground is being turned over from below, one mouthful at a time, at no cost to anyone.
The tunnels do a second job and it is the one adults underrate. Roots need air, and water has to get down rather than run off, and a soil packed tight does neither. Worm burrows are the plumbing and the ventilation of a garden. A bed with worms in it takes rain. A bed without them sheds it, and then you stand there wondering why the water pooled.
Third, and this is the one that turns dead leaves into ground: worms pull leaves down. A worm takes hold of a leaf and drags it into the mouth of its burrow, and that is how last autumn ends up as this year's dirt. It is also the most findable thing in the book, because a leaf stem standing upright out of a small hole is a thing your child can spot from standing height once she knows to look.
Then the animal itself, which is stranger than a child expects. No legs. It moves by squeezing itself long and short, and it grips the tunnel wall with rows of tiny bristles so the squeeze pushes the body forward instead of sliding it back. No eyes, but the skin senses light and a worm will move away from a bright beam. No lungs either. A worm takes in oxygen through its skin, which only works while the skin is damp, and that single fact explains almost every worm your child has ever seen: why they live in damp soil, why they are trouble on hot pavement, why they must go back into the ground rather than into a jar on a windowsill.
And it answers the question printed on the cover. You can tell which end is which. The pale thickened band sits nearer the head, so once your child knows that, the joke on the front of the book is over in about four seconds and she has a piece of real anatomy instead.
The last piece is the food web. Worms are also food. The birds working over your lawn are not decorating it, they are hunting, and once your child has that, the lawn stops being scenery.
For the record on depth, because this shelf is honest about that: this is the one in the series where the factual line is doing the heavy lifting, and there is more in the back matter than in some whole books at this age.
The child it lands with
The squeamish one, first. That is who the book is aimed at and it does not moralize about it. It just keeps showing him things until disgust turns into interest, which is how that particular conversion actually happens.
The child who would rather do than read is the other one. This is the book to hand a five year old who fidgets through picture books, because it comes with homework that is not homework and the homework is outdoors.
And a specific parent: the one who wants science in the house and does not want to buy a kit, a curriculum or a microscope this month. The yard is the lab. It is already paid for.
One place to stop and talk
Do not do this at the table. Do it outside, and do all three, because the point is that the book is checkable and one test does not prove that.
First, the light. Put a worm on damp paper in the shade and shine a flashlight at one end. It will move away from it. Then ask the question that matters: how did it know, when it has no eyes? Let her sit with that. The answer is that the skin itself senses light, and a child who has watched an animal react without eyes has met something genuinely surprising about how bodies work.
Second, listen. Put a worm on a dry sheet of stiff paper and get your ear down close while it moves. You should hear a faint scratching. Ask what is making the sound, because it will not be what she guesses. It is the bristles catching, the same ones that let it grip a tunnel wall. That is a body part she has just heard rather than been told about.
Third, count. Go out early and count the casts in one square of lawn about the size of a bath towel. Do not do the arithmetic for her. Just ask how much soil that would be by next summer if it keeps going every night.
Then the rule, and it is not manners, it is part of the science: every worm goes back where it came from, into damp ground, right away. A worm out of the soil is drying out the entire time you are holding it. Say that out loud so your child hears that the care and the biology are the same fact.
What to know going in
This book is genuinely gentle. No death, no peril, nothing frightening, no cliffhanger, and the pictures are warm. That is worth saying plainly, because a parent scanning a shelf of nature books has usually just been ambushed by a food chain page in something that looked equally mild.
Two real things all the same. It invites your child to handle live animals, and a warm hand and a jar on a sunny windowsill both kill a worm faster than a child expects, so the wormology needs an adult nearby and a firm rule about putting them back. Second, the book's position is that being disgusted by worms is a bit silly. That is the right position and it is also worth knowing if you have a child whose squeamishness is real and not a pose. Read it beside her. Do not hand it over as a cure.

Buy Yucky Worms together with a cheap trowel and nothing else.
