Nobody has ever been to the middle of the earth. Nobody ever will. Every fact anyone has about what is down there was worked out from up here, by people standing on the crust with instruments, and that is a much stranger thing to be handing a seven year old than a bag of rocks is.

The book does not say any of that. What the book does is send a class down. They forget their homework, Ms. Frizzle turns the punishment into a field trip, and the bus goes through the crust, on toward the center, and back out through a volcano. Joanna Cole wrote it and Bruce Degen drew it. It is a picture book, cartoon panels, with hand-lettered reports pinned around the margins in the series style.

The science it actually teaches

Rock is the subject most likely to be taught badly. The standard version hands a child three words and a chart, and the child memorizes the three words, and nothing else happens. What sits on our Stealth Science shelf here is a book that gets past the chart.

What a child actually comes away knowing.

Start with what the three words actually mean. Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic are not three substances. They are one substance in three conditions. Rock that cooled from melt. Rock made of pieces of older rock that settled and packed together. Rock that got buried, squeezed and heated until it turned into something else without ever melting. Once a child holds that, the three words stop being vocabulary and start being a description of what happened to a particular stone.

Which leads straight into the best idea in the book, which is that it is a loop. Rock melts and cools into new rock. Weather and water break that down into grains. Grains settle, pile up and press into layers. Layers get buried and cooked. Cooked rock gets pushed deep enough to melt, and it starts again. There is no beginning to the cycle and nothing gets used up. A child who has been shown a loop instead of a list will still have it at fourteen, because a loop is a thing you can walk around and a list is a thing you forget.

Then the layers, which is the part the frame exists to deliver. Crust on the outside, mantle under it, core in the middle, and it gets hotter and heavier the whole way down. The crust is the thin skin, and one of the useful shocks of the book is how little of the earth it is. Everything a person has ever built, grown, dug or walked on sits in that skin.

Sediment gives the other big one, and it is the one that turns rock into a record. Material settles lowest first, so in an undisturbed stack the bottom went down before the top did. That is why a road cut or a canyon wall reads as time. A child who takes that in has just met the whole idea of relative age without anybody using the word.

And the volcano is the door. It is the one place the deep material comes out where a person can stand at a safe distance and watch it happen. The book uses it as an exit, which is a story decision, but it is also the honest scientific answer to the question of how anybody ever got a look at the inside of anything.

Now the part that makes this title different from every other book in the series, and it is the reason to own it. Elsewhere the bus takes the class somewhere real that people have genuinely been. Astronauts have gone up. Submarines have gone down. Nobody has gone toward the center. The drawings of the mantle and the core in this book are not photographs of anywhere and they are not guesses either. They are what the evidence forces. That gap between what is drawn and how it was arrived at is the best thing in the book, and it is not printed anywhere in it. You supply it.

The child it lands with

There is a child who comes back from every walk with pockets full of gravel and wants to know what each piece is. That child has usually been handed a rock identification guide, been unable to use it, and quietly given up. This book is the thing that goes before the guide, because it explains what the categories in the guide are for.

The child who liked the volcano page in some other book and has been chasing volcanoes ever since. This gives them the whole system the volcano belongs to.

The child who asks how anyone knows. That child is rarer and this is the best book on the shelf for them, so long as you have the conversation below.

Less good for a child who wants photographs. This is drawn, and drawn loud, and a child who wants a glossy mineral reference will find it silly.

One place to stop and talk

Once the bus is below anything a person has ever reached, put down a question that has nothing to do with rock. How would you find out what is inside something you cannot open?

Let your child work at it for a while, because the answers they come up with are the right kind. You could weigh it and see if it is heavier than it looks. You could shake it and listen. You could tip it and feel the weight move. Every one of those is a real method, and a child who invents them has understood something about science that no amount of vocabulary will teach.

Then tell them what actually got done, and keep it general, because the detail is not the point. Earthquakes send shaking all the way through the planet, and that shaking arrives at the far side changed. It speeds up, it slows down, it bends, and some of it does not arrive at all. Work backward from what arrives and you can say what it must have passed through. That is where the layers in the picture came from. Nobody saw them.

This is worth doing properly because it is the only place in the series where you can hand a child the difference between a fact and how a fact was caught. The book cannot do it. It is a picture book and it draws the answer. You are the part that supplies the question, and it takes about four minutes.

What to know going in

There is nothing frightening in it. Nobody is hurt, nobody is ill, and the tone stays silly from the first page to the last. Lava and heat are on the page, and the class is briefly somewhere no living thing could survive, but it is drawn as an adventure rather than as danger and children read it that way.

Two real things, both small. The first is the frame. The trip happens because the class forgot its homework, which is a school-shaped setup and a slightly sour one, and a homeschooled child does not have assignments in that sense. If your house does not run on that arrangement it is worth one sentence out loud so the setup does not read as a rule about how learning gets earned.

The second is the impossibility, which is sharper here than in the rest of the series. A bus cannot go into the mantle. Nothing can. Say once, plainly, that the trip is invented and the geology is not, and a young reader has no trouble keeping the two apart for the rest of the book.

The store bands it 2 to 5, and that band is about content. A second grader will take in the pictures and the story line and want you reading the margin text aloud.

$8.99 at The Magic School Bus Inside the Earth, which is roughly the cost of one hot lunch and is the cheapest rock unit you will ever run. Buy it with a jar and a walk rather than with another book. It is written to be used against real stones, and the loop it teaches only clicks when a child is holding a piece of something and trying to work out which of the three things happened to it. If you own one geology thing this year, own this and a hand lens.
