There is a light switch on the wall of the room you are sitting in, and almost nobody in the house, adults included, could say what happens on the other side of it.
Your child has seen a lamp come on. They have felt a toaster get hot and watched a fan start turning. Everything between the wall and the light is a rumour, and most of what a child believes about it is wrong in a way nobody ever corrects, because you cannot point at the thing and show them.
That gap is why this particular title is worth more than its position in the series suggests. Ms. Frizzle's class shrinks small enough to fit inside the wiring, and the trip runs from the generating end of the system out along the lines, into a house, and through the things in a house that spend the current. Joanna Cole wrote it. The copy on our shelf is the anniversary paperback of the original run, which the publisher says carries updated scientific information.
This one is a picture book, and that is the real fork in this part of the series. The chapter books alongside it are ordinary paragraphs with line drawings, and they cost five dollars. This is the crowded original format: cartoon panels, speech balloons, and hand-lettered reports pinned round the edges of every page. It is nine dollars against their five, and what the extra four dollars buys is the artwork carrying half the teaching.
The science it actually teaches
This is why it sits on our Stealth Science shelf. There are a great many books that tell a child electricity is dangerous and useful. This is one of the very few that shows a child where it comes from.
Start with the loop, because everything else in the book hangs off it. Current only moves round a complete circle. Break the circle anywhere and everything on it stops, which is what a switch is: a deliberate break you can close on purpose. A child who has that one idea can look at a light switch for the rest of their life and know exactly what is happening behind the wall.
Then the far end of the loop, which is the part nearly every children's book about electricity skips. Books start at a battery. This one starts before that. Something, somewhere, has to be turning a generator, and the wire in your wall is the tail end of whatever that is. Electricity is not stored in the house. It is being made, continuously, somewhere else, while your child stands at the switch.
Then the middle. The lines outside are the part of the system a child can actually see, and this book is the reason a child starts noticing them. Poles down a road stop being scenery and turn into the answer to a question. That is a rare thing for a book to do, and it happens on the walk home rather than on the page.
Then the three uses, and this is where the book quietly does something clever. A bulb lights, a toaster heats, a motor turns, and they look like three separate wonders. They are two ideas. A bulb has a thin wire in it that resists the current, gets white hot and throws off light, and the light is a side effect of the heat. A toaster is exactly the same trick, wider wire, no glow to speak of, all heat and no show. So the bulb and the toaster are one idea wearing two coats. The motor is the other idea: current makes magnetism, magnetism pushes, and the push spins a shaft. Every fan, every drill, every food mixer in your house is that one arrangement.
A child who takes all of it in has a system rather than a set of facts. They know where the power is made, how it gets to the house, why it stops when a wire breaks, and what the machines are actually doing with it. That is a whole unit, and it is in a book you can finish in a sitting.
One thing to say out loud once, then it is handled. The bus is invented, the wiring is not. Nothing about the frame could happen and everything inside the frame is how houses actually work, and a child told that plainly at the start has no trouble keeping the two apart.
The child it lands with
Somewhere in your house there is a child who has already asked where the power comes from and been told "the wall", and has not been satisfied with that for a while now. This is the answer, in a form small enough to hold.
The child who is building things. Anyone with a motor kit, a battery, a torch they have taken apart, or a set of wires they have connected the wrong way round will get more out of this than the instructions ever gave them.
The child who lives somewhere the power goes out. If your house has a stretch of winter where the lights go and the story of why involves a road and a generator and somebody driving out to fix it, this book has already happened to your child and they just do not have the words for it yet.
It is a poor fit for the child who needs one thread at a time. See below.
One place to stop and talk
This one is worth doing properly, and it takes about ten minutes.
Turn off a lamp in the room you are sitting in. Then work backwards out loud, together. The cord to the socket. The socket to the wire in the wall. The wall to whatever brings power into the house. Out to the pole, along the road, and keep going. Ask your child where it stops, and make them stay with it, because the honest answer is that it does not stop until you arrive at something being burned or something falling or something blowing, and the whole chain is running right now while you sit there.
Then the second question, which is the harder one. What actually happened when you turned the lamp off? Not "the electricity stopped". The loop opened. Everything upstream is still going. You did not turn anything off out there, you took your lamp out of the circle.
If your child is still with you, one more. Ask what is turning the generator where you live, and be honest if you are not certain. Water, diesel, gas, wind, coal, and the answer is different in different towns. Finding out together is a better afternoon than most worksheets, and it makes the book local rather than general.
What to know going in
This is the only book on this shelf whose subject can kill a child in the real world, and the caution is not optional.
The book makes the inside of a power line look like a marvellous place to be. It is charming, it works, and that charm is doing the teaching. It also means a small child has just spent twenty minutes enjoying the idea of being inside the wires, and they do not yet have the instinct that keeps the rest of us at a distance. Have the conversation on the same day, before the book gets put down. Sockets are not for fingers or forks. Cords do not go near water. And the one that actually matters up here: a wire on the ground after a storm looks completely dead and is not, you do not go near it, you do not touch anything touching it, and you go and get an adult. Two minutes of that, said calmly and once, and the book is entirely a good thing.
The second item is the layout, and it is the known trait of this format rather than a fault. Every spread runs the story, the speech balloons and the taped-on reports at the same time. A child who reads straight down a page is fine. A child who is distractible, or still working hard at decoding, can bounce clean off it and come away with nothing, and then the book looks like it failed when it was the page that failed. Read the story line aloud first, then go back for the notes as a second pass. Skipping the notes means skipping a third of the science, so plan for twice the sitting it appears to need.
The band is worth a word too. Grades 2 to 4 describes the format and undersells the vocabulary. Treat it as a grade 2 to 3 read-aloud and a grade 3 to 5 independent read, and it fits far more houses than the tag suggests.

It is also the one I would keep somewhere findable rather than filed away, because the next time the power goes out in your house you will have the best lesson plan you are ever going to get for free, sitting in the dark with a child who now knows what stopped.
